Enterprise Business Intelligence Solutions

The mission of CUIT’s Enterprise Business Intelligence Solutions (EBIS) team is to support the strategic and operational needs of Columbia University in the City of New York. We provide access to essential University data through the use of industry best practices and innovative solutions. EBIS strives to provide reliable, accurate, timely and secure information from across multiple key University functions such as Finance, Human Resources, Student Administration, Research and beyond. By utilizing cutting edge enterprise-wide technologies, the EBIS team provides services which collect, connect, integrate, transform, analyze and present data in order to facilitate the making of informed decisions and critical business insights.

What is Business Intelligence?

Business Intelligence (BI) leverages software and services to transform data into actionable insights that inform an organization’s strategic and tactical business decisions. BI offers a way for people to examine data to understand trends, and derive insights by streamlining the effort needed to search for, merge and query the data necessary to make sound business decisions. BI tools access and analyze data sets and present analytical findings in reports, summaries, dashboards, graphs, charts and maps to provide users with detailed intelligence about the state of the business.

Our Services

The EBIS team provides BI services to the Columbia University community. In addition to technological expertise, the EBIS team possesses subject matter expertise from a wide cross section of functional areas and domains. EBIS has developed a robust catalog of reporting solutions from a variety of university systems such as Student Information System (SIS), ARC Financials, PAC human resources and many others. EBIS offers end to end solutions for your data needs.

Using best of breed data integration tools, EBIS collects business data from a variety of sources and securely stores in the University Data Store (UDS). During the collection process, EBIS will transform and perform data quality/validation rules based on business requirements. Data models are designed and architected to ensure the data are stored for efficient reporting. Data refresh automation is also applied to ensure our customers have the latest possible data to conduct their analysis.

EBIS also provides custom data integration services for schools and departments. A couple of sample scenarios are described below:

Scenario 1:

A department is utilizing a 3rd party application to keep track of tickets its student population has submitted. To effectively manage the tickets, the department wants to maintain an up-to-date list of its students with their contact information (phone numbers and email). This information is stored in CUIT’s Student Data Store (SDS), managed by EBIS. Our team can create an automated daily feed of student contact information that can be sent and ingested into the 3rd party tool.

Scenario 2:

A school is utilizing a 3rd party application, such as Slate, and wants to do additional reporting and querying of the data. EBIS can partner with the school to extract the data from Slate and securely store in a database for additional querying and reporting by the school.

Data across disparate systems often needs to be connected to provide greater insights and reporting value. Within the UDS, EBIS can connect data to bridge the gap between systems.  For example, student data and payroll data can be connected to provide a school/department with insights into its student officer population.

Using a wide variety of reporting tools, EBIS develops dynamic, intuitive and user-friendly reporting solutions. A standard set of reports for ARC, PAC and SIS data are available with proper approvals. In addition, EBIS offers custom report dashboard development services using tools such as Microsoft Power BI.
